Foods of Shinchon 신촌의 맛있는 감자튀김–Belgian Fried Potatoes
I’d say the Koreans are pretty good at imitating Western taste. In fact, in some cases, they do a better job of presenting the food that they have learned how to make, even though it was initially totally foreign to them. Here then, is an introduction to some of the foods one can see when walking around Hongdae/Shinchon, the place full of young people, what one person called, “The Fountain of Youth.”
Currently fried potatoes–knows as French Fries
These are Belgian Fried Potatoes. Now, those of you who know anything about Belgium knows that Belgium is divided into three linguistic regions: French (Walloon), Dutch (Flemish) and German. In each of these areas one speaks a different language. This place, however, that speciailizes in Belgian Fried Potatoes is NOT in Belgium, it is in South Korea.
However, the fried potatoes are served the same in all three regions. They are served in a cone of wrapped paper. The places that sell these fried potatoes are known as Fritkofs, Flemish for a fried potato shack, I would imagine. Not pretty to look at, these places that sell Belgian Fried Potatoes have one purpose only: sell potatoes.
Belgium is currently petitioning the UN to declare the Belgian Fried Potato a national treasure of Belgium, and to give it historical status.
