We spent New Year’s in this quiet, colonial town. We stayed at the Hostel Colonia, which was really cool even though Uruguay was in the throes of one of the most intense heat waves in modern South American history, reaching 38 or even 40 degrees.
Only it was not so quiet. The local kids got drunk and were carrying on until the wee hours of the morning, New Year’s Day, 2014. The caretaker at the hostel showed no surprise whatsoever as she sat on the couch with her daughter, sipping her mate. “Es normal,” she said. “Es muy normal.”
